Zane Raphael Mandel Michalak had a love of life, having a great time and riding the edge. Did we mention he was a lot of fun? Zane also struggled feeling comfortable in his own skin but was always at home in nature: snowboarding, biking, skateboarding, camping or simply being. It is his zest and energy we pull forward into the Keep It Moving mission. Zane is the primary philosophy officer of Keep It Moving.

His loving friends and family live life with Zane’s values and practices: forgive easily, love deeply, eat heartily and be fearless.

His brother Max, was Zane’s deepest love and confidant. He misses him every second of every hour of every day.

Zane looked out for the little guy, the underdog. He graduated from Oakwood Friends School, a small Friends school in Poughkeepsie NY. There he found a place where he could be without judgment and could shine. Zane befriended a freshman boy who had lost his older brother. This connection meant so much for this young man, supporting his adjustment to the new school. Zane and he remained friends well after he graduated OaKwood.

He played a sport every season, although he was not a star he always had a great time and an asset to the team’s spirit. While at Oakwood he went to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity to help repair homes damaged by hurricane Katrina. After HIgh School, Zane went to Siena college where completed his Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. He planned to work in a correctional facility helping men find their way after release from prison. His college friend said, “We never would have even looked twice at this new kid, but Zane brought him in so our circle widened. We were all better because of his open nature.”

Zane never had the opportunity to realize his dreams. We lost him on September 4, 2017, in our home to an accidental Opioid Overdose. We know he didn’t plan on leaving us that night but in a terrible instant, he was gone.

Our world went black, a tsunami washed us away in the early time after his death. Of course, with the sunrise and sunset, one’s feet come to the ground. As friends and neighbors ask the terrible question, “How are you?” Zane’s cousin Zach began to answer, “We are keeping it moving, that’s what. our family does.”

Keep It Moving did its first Stocking project, in December 2017 and became an organization under the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan County in February 2018.
